Equipment

  • medium saucepan
  • wooden spoon
  • measuring cups
  • serving bowls

Ingredients

  • 1 cup steel cut oats
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup fresh berries (optional)
  • 1 banana sliced (optional)
  • 2 tbsp almond butter (optional)
  • 2 tbsp chopped walnuts (optional)

Instructions

  • Add the steel cut oats to a dry saucepan over medium heat and toast for 2–3 minutes while stirring gently.
  • Add the water, milk, and salt to the saucepan with the toasted oats.
  • Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat to low.
  • Cook the oats for 20–30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until creamy but still slightly chewy.
  • If the oatmeal becomes too thick, stir in a splash of warm milk or water near the end of cooking.
  • Serve warm with maple syrup, cinnamon, berries, bananas, almond butter, or chopped walnuts.

Notes

Toast the oats before cooking for deeper nutty flavor. Add extra milk or water while reheating to restore creamy texture. Customize with berries, bananas, almond butter, walnuts, cinnamon, chia seeds, or maple syrup.
