Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup old fashioned oats
  • 1 cup milk or water
  • 1 apple, diced
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup or honey (optional)
  • 2 tbsp chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
  • 2 tbsp Greek yogurt or peanut butter (optional)

Instructions

  • Wash and dice the apple into small pieces.
  • In a saucepan, combine the old fashioned oats, milk or water, diced apple, cinnamon, and salt.
  • Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium heat.
  • Cook for 5 to 7 minutes while stirring occasionally until the oats become creamy and the apples soften.
  • If the oatmeal becomes too thick, add a splash of milk or water while cooking.
  • Let the oatmeal sit for about one minute before serving.
  • Top with walnuts, pecans, yogurt, peanut butter, cranberries, or maple syrup before serving warm.

Notes

Use sweet apples like Honeycrisp, Fuji, or Gala for the best flavor and texture. Add extra milk or water while reheating if the oatmeal thickens in the refrigerator. Top with walnuts, pecans, cranberries, yogurt, or peanut butter for additional flavor and nutrition.
